2021 update: After 27 years of bountiful baskets and tables of fresh organic produce, we are hanging our hats up from full-time farming and enjoying our farm in a new way. While pursuing other interests and endeavors, both agricultural and otherwise, we continue to stay involved in the local farming scene. Through mentorship, consultation, and incubation, we remain deeply entrenched in the farming community. Our home farm fields are now leased to past employees running Steelbow Farm, and our beloved river farm in Bastrop County is now home to former Tecolote manager, Lorig Hawkins and Middle Ground Farm. Thank you for your interest in our farm and your support of local agriculture, and for those who’ve been Tecolote “Basketeers” over the past three decades, we still miss bringing food to your door, and sending you recipes and veggie lists weekly. Happy to have pioneered organic food production in Central Texas!
some history:
Ours is a small family farm located on the rich soils of the Blackland Prairie thirteen miles east of downtown Austin, Texas.
Starting with 16 members in 1994, our CSA is the first and longest-running veggie delivery service in the region, and grew to over 300 subscriptions in later years. We raised our three children on the farm, and kept milk goats during their growing years. We keep laying hens and raise pastured pork occasionally for sale to restaurant and CSA customers.
Horses, dogs, and cats live here, and a perennial creek bisects our property. In 2010, following Travis County’s usurpation of our groundwater, we purchased a 20 acre parcel in Bastrop County along the Colorado River in order to have enough water to grow enough food for our CSA, market, and restaurant customers.
David and Katie found the land in 1993, then just a pasture for a nearby dairy’s dormant milk cows, and began prepping the soil, battling Bermuda grass, building infrastructure, and digging trenches. Since 1994, our farm has been bringing delicious, fresh vegetables to Austinites and building the organic movement in the area. The original home delivery CSA and subscription service farm in the state, we have had a lot of fun and experience expanding the availability of new varieties and fine-tuning best possible post-harvest handling methods for our hot summers.
We grew over 150 vegetable varieties from all over the world, including heirlooms as well as modern hybrids. Tecolote Farm has been growing the highest quality produce for Central Texans since 1994, and every year our farm crew has expanded to be able to grow more food for Central Texans.
Tecolote Farm brings a unique flavor to the Austin community through CSA delivery- the longest-running in Texas, seasonal farmers’ markets, and partnerships with some of the city’s best restaurants
